Multitasking is a myth
To my mind, multitasking is just another word for doing several things badly at the same time. Correct me if I’m wrong!
They say women are better at multitasking than men. If that’s true, I say it’s through necessity, not genetic aptitude.
If you’re expected to pursue a career at the same time as raising kids and managing a home while somehow looking fit and flawless (an exhausting sentence to read, never mind actually doing it!) then I guess multitasking is a must.
But would anyone actively choose to multitask?
Isn’t it more satisfying (and ultimately much more productive) to devote yourself fully to one task at a time?
This photo is from my last evening before going back to work after the festive break. I had a long to-do list: de-Christmas-ify the house, check on emails, and make a start on all the “that’s January’s problem” tasks that had accumulated before the holidays.
But instead, I ended up next to my mum in the kitchen, completely absorbed in learning a fiddly new knitting technique. (Italian cast-off, if you’re interested.) It demanded all my focus, and once I mastered it, I felt as proud as if I had been one of mum’s primary school pupils.
It’s one thing at a time for me from now on!
